Questions on Mamma Roma   (Pasolini. Italy. 1962)


1)  Describe the social and historical background of the “Mamma Roma”, considering in particular the social connotation of the characters.

2)  At the beginning, the film sketches the main themes which are developed later in the film. In your opinion, what are these themes?

3) Try to define the conflicting aspects of Mamma Roma’s personality. What feelings, ambitions, desires drive her? What does she wish for herself and her son?

4) The second main characters is Ettore.  Identify the main elements of his personality and the phases of his progressive change.  How is he presented when he first meets his mother? What elements influence his later development?

5) Analyze the relationship between Mamma Roma an her son from the point of view of both characters, referring to the most significant scenes. How does this relationship develop? Are there any moments of ambiguity or conflict? Which ones?

6) Mamma Roma and Ettore’s antagonist in the film is Carmine, her former ponce. What role does he play in the story? How would you describe his relationship with Mamma Roma?

7) The other female character in the film is Bruna, the single mother whom Ettore loves.  Describe her personality within her social context, considering how the film director introduces her.

8) Pasolini’s Rome is populated by various minor characters. Can you identify them, deescribe their social appearance and relationship with the social context to which they they belong?

9) Rome, the city, could be considered the main hidden character of the story. Do you agree with this interpretation? If you do, what elements of the film could support this interpretation?

10) The black and white photography creates particular light and shades effects. Which ones can you recognize and which suggestions do they arouse in the public?

11) The music consists in a double motive, an internal one and an external one. These two leitmotiv have very different meanings. Can you tell which ones?

12) Being directed by a writer, the film contains many references to literature and painting. Can you recognize any of these references?

13) The film has a social, philosophical and religious message. Which one? Where does it reveal it self?

14) In your opinion what is the director's attitude towards his characters?  How would you define the style of acting?
