Synopsis
When George is released after seven years in prison he is rejected by his wife and daughter and seeks employment from the underworld boss he went to prison to protect. He is given the job of driving Simone, a successful call-girl, around London to meet her clients.
Simone is also in search of Cathy, an old friend. But when George falls under Simone's spell and agrees to help find Cathy, he opens the door to compications that threaten both his livelihood and his life.
CONTEXT:
Seven years before the release of this film (and therefore when George
went into prison), the conservative government came to power and began to promote an
enterprise culture. Part of the ironic message of this film has to do with the fact
that, though this government was led by a woman (Mrs. Thatcher), women were able to gain
only unequal access to money and power - as represented by Simone.
Simone can therefore be viewed as a symbolic expression of the place of women in Thatcher's Britain of the 1980's.
