I richiami pittorici e letterari del film fanno riferimento al tema centrale del martirio e della
passione dell’innocente: nell’infermeria del carcere, quasi anticamera dell’inferno, vengono citati i
versi iniziali del quarto canto dell’Inferno di Dante. L’immagine più potente è però sicuramente la
prospettiva con cui è inquadrato il corpo giacente di Ettore legato al letto di contenzione, che
richiama il “Cristo morto” di Mantegna. La luce che filtra dalla grata richiama invece nel gioco
luministico del quadro di Raffaello raffigurante S. Pietro in carcere. Altri riferimenti pittorici di
chiara derivazione caravaggesca compaiono nella rappresentazione di Ettore ( “Il Bacchino malato”,
“Ragazzo col cesto di frutta”). Anche la scena iniziale del matrimonio richiama la struttura classica
delle “Ultime cene”.

Pictorial and literary references in the film refer to the central theme of the martyredom and of the innocent’s passion: in the prison hospital in-mates recall the anteroom of hell for us by mentioning the first verses of the fourth canto of the Dante’s inferno. The most powerful imagine is surely the angle at which Ettore’s lying body, tied up in the contention bed, is filmed with a clear reference to Mantegna’s “Cristo Morto”.  The light filtering through the bars of a ceiling window reminds us of the light effect in Raffaello’s painting, “Portraying St.Peter”.  Other artistic references to Caravaggio’s paintings are to be seem in the way Ettore is filmed.  Also in the initial scene of the wedding banquet, we are shown the same classical structure as the “Ultima cena”.

-Il y a des références littéraires et picturales, comme à l’occasion du mariage, on dirait la Cène de Léonard de Vinci. A la fin de l’histoire, Ettore allongé sur son lit représente le Christ.

-Les références se rapportent au passage entre l’Italie traditionnelle (campagne) et l’Italie moderne (la ville-la banlieue) Le message est le suivant : une personne non instruite ne peut mener une vie convenable avec un métier digne de ce nom, pour trouver un vrai métier il faut passer par le prêtre.
