Questions on Mona Lisa   (Neil Jordan. UK. 1986)

These are general questions to consider after your first viewing of the film:

1) Who is George?   What might he represent a) in terms of Class b) in terms of story (i.e. for the spectator)

2) What might the white rabbit mean?  Can you think of any other stories where white rabbits are used?

3) When Thomas and George engage in story-telling, George talks about his life as if it is a story happening to someone else.  What other references to story-telling are there?

4) When George has new clothes bought by Simone, he tells Thomas that he is "growing up."  What might this mean?

5) Can you suggest how George's visit to the Soho clubs in search of Cathy might be understood on another level?

6) Why is George asked by Mortwell (Michael Caine's character) to find out what Simone does with the Arab?

7) Simone says at one point that the punters sometimes fall in love with the person they think she is.   When George first thinks he has found Cathy, it turns out to be a girl called May.   When he meets Cathy for the first time she says her name is Mary.  What might all this mean?

8) Why does Cathy meet with Anderson in Church, and what might this say about the state of Britain in the 1980's?

9) "You know ... the way it is between men and ... women."  What does the exclusive relationship between Simone and Cathy say about George's hopes and the position of men in general?

10) What relationship with the feminine (and function in life) does George finally establish for himself?

11) What is the significance of the song?  Of the painting?  Of Mona Lisa?
