Dapprima i vestiti nuovi di George segnano l’innalzamento del suo status sociale, ma non č tutto cosě semplice. Essi possono indicare il miglioramento dell’immagine che George ha di se stesso, ma anche l’inizio della consapevolezza da parte sua che le cose sono cambiate attorno a lui. Le donne, per esempio, sono cambiate :č Simone che gli ha comprato i vestiti, ed essi rappresentano il potere che lei ha su di lui. Essi mostrano anche che l’apparenza non č la realtŕ (infatti George č ancora se stesso). Quindi Simone puň apparire dapprima come una prostituta , ma poi č chiamata “lady”, “signora” ( e in seguito si accenna al fatto che sia una monaca travestita “ a nun in disguise”).

At first George's new clothes signal his rising status, but this is not simple. It may indicate his improving self image, but it is also the beginning of George realising that things have changed around him. Women, for example, have changed (Simone has bought these clothes for him) and the clothes therefore represent her power over him. They also show that appearance is not reality (George is still himself) - so Simone may at first appear to be a "tart", but is later recognised to be a "lady" (and later it is suggested she is a nun in disguise).

It may mean that George is trying to understand who he really is, growing up not only socially but
also psychologically. ( But Thomas tells George he will never change).

Potrebbe indicare che George sta cercando di capire chi č, crescendo non solo socialmente ma anche
psicologicamente. ( Ma Thomas gli dice che non cambierŕ mai ).
