L’inganno e la mistificazione sono le uniche cose che contano (legalmente, ora ) nell’Inghilterra della Thatcher.  L’unica certezza č che nulla č quel che sembra. Simone č felice di essere una finzione (“fiction”) per gli uomini, č il suo modo per sopravvivere in questa nuova Inghilterra. Nel dire a George questa semplice veritŕ, lei agisce come sua maestra e confidente, ma per George č un motivo in piů per volerla salvare. Egli non capisce che lei lo fa di proposito per avere accesso al denaro, al potere e alla protezione, proprio come George usa la finzione per proteggersi dalla durezza della realtŕ.

Deception and misconception are the name of the (legitimate) game now in Thatcher's England - the one certainty is that nothing is as it seems. Simone is happy to be a fiction for men - it is her means of employment in the new England. In telling George this simple truth, she acts as his teacher and confidant - but for George it is a reason to want to rescue her. He does not realise that she does it voluntarily to gain access to money and power and protection, just as George uses fiction as a protection from the harshness of reality.

It is a trick of mirrors about their identities ( mirrors can be seen in the film as metaphors of the
double); they want to look different from what they really are, hiding their true identities.
