The only real relationship that men and women can have is as father and daughter. All other attempts become barriers. The only meaningful relationship that women can have is with other women. But the price is that Simone has had to change herself into a type of man who ruthlessly protects (is prepared to kill other men to protect her woman). Therefore George's desire to protect is out of date. This basic (mythical?) male function is no longer needed. Again George is only able to come to terms with this after relating it as a fiction to Thomas.

The exclusive relationship between Simone and Cathy shows the impossibility of a true communication between the sexes and underlines their separation. Jordan seems to use homosexuality as a metaphor of social, moral and existential ambiguity, which can be seen in all the characters of the film.
